At least 78 civilians were killed when unknown armed men attacked a gold mining site in Jebel Iraq, Central Equatoria State, on March 28.
Police spokesperson Kwacijwok Dominic Amandoch confirmed the victims were miners, with some still missing in nearby forests.
Security forces, including police and the South Sudan People’s Defence Forces, have been deployed to patrol the area and conduct rescue operations.
Eleven bodies have been transported to a mortuary, but the toll is expected to rise.
Authorities have not identified the attackers, though unconfirmed reports suggest an opposition-linked camp nearby.
Eyewitnesses said the gunmen opened fire indiscriminately, forcing residents to flee for safety.
