Geopolitical analyst Prof. Anna Malindog-Uy criticized what she described as the Philippines’ excessive reliance on the United States, stressing that concerns over foreign military presence should not be dismissed as paranoia but seen as foresight.
In an interview with Bombo Radyo, Uy argued that the existence of U.S. bases in the country limits the government’s ability to pursue an independent foreign policy, particularly amid tensions in the Middle East and flashpoints such as the Taiwan Strait.
She explained that public apprehension about U.S. military facilities reflects lessons drawn from current crises and highlights the need to safeguard national security and interests.
Uy urged that steps must be taken now to ensure genuine independence and to prevent undue American influence over Philippine policies.
According to her, wisdom and foresight in assessing the nation’s situation are more important than waiting until the Philippines is pressured into critical circumstances.
