Geopolitical analyst Herman Tiu Laurel said the Philippines’ arbitral victory against China has only fueled tension rather than development.

Ten years after the ruling, he noted that fishermen have not benefited, while maritime disputes worsened.

He added that economic opportunities and infrastructure projects from China have dropped to zero, unlike the $25 billion agreements during former President Duterte’s time.

Laurel also clarified that the arbitral award was not UN-backed, as it was never reviewed by the International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea.
