African Union (AU) Commission Chairperson Mahmoud Ali Youssouf on Wednesday strongly condemned the suicide bombings in northeastern Nigeria that killed at least 23 people and injured 108 others in Maiduguri.

Local officials reported that suspected suicide bombers detonated improvised explosive devices across three public facilities on Monday evening.

Youssouf described the incident as a “heinous terrorist attack” and extended condolences to the Nigerian government and people.

He reiterated the AU’s firm rejection of all forms of violence by terrorist and extremist groups against civilians and security forces, calling such acts grave violations of human rights that undermine peace and stability.

Commending Nigeria’s ongoing counterterrorism efforts, he stressed that the tragedy highlights the persistent threat of terrorism and the need for vigilance and resilience.

Youssouf urged the international community to increase support for Nigeria and the wider Lake Chad Basin region to address the root causes of violent extremism.

He reaffirmed the AU’s solidarity and unwavering support for Nigeria in promoting sustainable peace and stability.
