The Department of Justice (DOJ) has confirmed that it has already transmitted the alleged malversation cases involving Senator Joel Villanueva to the Office of the Ombudsman.

DOJ Spokesperson Atty. Polo Martinez explained that the Ombudsman will now review the findings of the prosecution.

The Ombudsman has the authority to decide whether these cases will be filed before the Sandiganbayan. Reports indicate that Villanueva is facing multiple charges, including malversation of public funds, graft, bribery, and violations of procurement laws.

The Ombudsman also confirmed that the case is already in an advanced stage of review.

This means that the investigation and evidence-gathering are nearing completion.

The development marks a critical step in determining whether formal charges will be pursued against the senator.
