Cagayan de Oro City — The Oro Chamber of Commerce is backing calls to strengthen the use of renewable energy in the Philippines, stressing that the country must reduce its dependence on imported fuel to shield facilities and transportation systems from global disruptions.
Oro Chamber President Engr. Almarco Brito emphasized that the ongoing conflict between Israel, the United States, and Iran has exposed how unprepared the Philippine government is in facing oil supply shocks.
He noted that the Middle East crisis has already triggered higher fuel prices, which in turn pushed up the cost of basic commodities nationwide.
Brito said the situation serves as a “major lesson” for the country, highlighting the urgent need to invest in sustainable energy sources.
He warned that relying solely on imported petroleum leaves the economy vulnerable whenever geopolitical tensions escalate.
The Chamber believes that accelerating renewable energy adoption such as solar, wind, and hydro power could help stabilize costs and ensure long-term resilience for both businesses and consumers.
