The National Security Council (NSC) admitted that the Philippines’ food security may be affected due to the ongoing tension in the Middle East, following the fourth week of conflict between the U.S., Israel, and Iran.
During a Senate hearing, NSC Undersecretary Nestor Herico said that the crisis poses a threat not only to energy but also to the global food supply.
“Threatening food security in major agricultural nations like India, Brazil, and Thailand,” Herico stated.
He made the statement after Senator Loren Legarda questioned whether there are still sectors in government that do not recognize the possibility that the country is already facing a crisis.
“Thank you for saying that, because others still don’t want to accept [that the country is in crisis].
They say ‘we’re okay,’ but how can we move quickly if ‘we’re okay.’ And others even argue: ‘we’re not in crisis,’ what is that,” Legarda said.
