Cobbie Jan Canda of Kabataan Partylist opposed Senator Robin Padilla’s proposal to lower the age of criminal responsibility from 15 to 10 years old following the Tacloban crime incident.
According to Canda, this will not solve the root problems among the youth, as the real cause lies in the normalized culture of violence and impunity. He added that children are still in the process of growing and gradually learning to distinguish right from wrong.
Even the current age limit of 15, he argued, is insufficient compared to international standards.
For this reason, he called on the public and lawmakers not to implement the proposal, as it does not address the true causes of the problem.
