School administrators must balance the benefits and potential harm of conducting shooting drills, especially for young children, according to the Professional Regulatory Board of Criminology.
Board Member Dr. Warren Corpuz said drills can help in preparedness but may also cause trauma among students and teachers due to exposure to the imagery of possible tragedy.
Because of this, he recommended consultation with psychologists, psychiatrists, criminologists, and experts in law enforcement and public safety.
The official noted that through consultation, it can be determined whether such drills are suitable for the youth or may instead cause greater anxiety and trauma among participants.
