United People’s Initiative (UPI) Legal Counsel Atty. Melchor Magdamo underscored the urgency of the petition filed before the Supreme Court challenging the Senate’s decision to lower the impeachment voting threshold from 16 to 14 votes.

Magdamo argued that majority senators are bending constitutional rules, warning that setting such a precedent poses a threat to other constitutional officers, including the President and Supreme Court Justices.

He emphasized that the Constitution strictly requires a two-thirds vote of the 24-member Senate complement—or 16 votes—to render a valid impeachment judgment.
