The Consumers for Renewable Energy Advocacy in Mindanao (CREAM) described the recent Yellow Alert issued by the NGCP—triggered by a trip at the Kauswagan coal-fired power plant—as a stark warning for the island’s energy security.
CREAM Project Director Bencyrus Ellorin warned that relying on coal for nearly 50 percent of Mindanao’s power supply poses significant operational risks.
Ellorin expressed deep concern given that the Kauswagan facility is considered one of the region’s newest power plants.
In response, CREAM called on government agencies and energy providers to accelerate the transition to renewable energy to ensure a stable, long-term power grid.
