Education sectors have emphasized the training of Department of Education (DepEd) teachers in basic sign language as a step toward promoting inclusive education.
Dr. Therese June Aranas, head of the Department of Special Education, confirmed that the implementation has already begun in city schools such as Lapasan Elementary School and Abuhan Elementary School.
Despite the currently small number of teachers in the department, their effort to slowly train teachers in this skill continues.
Through this initiative, the agency aims to ensure that lessons within the classroom become more inclusive and easier for students with special needs to understand.
