Psychiatric Nurse Julie Mae Maisog-Robles, RN, revealed that disasters such as earthquakes have a significant impact on the mental health of children, with many at risk of developing post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) after witnessing the destruction of their schools.
She explained that aside from PTSD, victims may also suffer from severe anxiety and depression due to the trauma caused by such calamities.
Robles stressed the importance of providing immediate psychological first aid to help children recover from fear and distress.
She also emphasized the crucial role of parents in offering presence and emotional support to restore their children’s confidence.
Finally, Robles urged continuous care and protection of students’ mental well-being, especially during times of disaster.
