Heavy rains brought by easterlies once again drenched several parts of the city, prompting flood warnings across Northern Mindanao.

The Hapsay Sapa Movement called on residents and barangays to strictly observe proper waste disposal and maintain cleanliness in rivers, creeks, and drainage systems to prevent a repeat of the devastating floods experienced during Typhoon Basyang, particularly in Iligan City.

Patrick Gabutina, Team Focal Person of Hapsay Sapa, underscored that community discipline is vital in mitigating severe flooding, especially during strong rains caused by easterlies and typhoons.

In an interview with Bombo Radyo, he explained that their campaign has partnered with the City Local Environment and Natural Resources Office (CLENRO) and local schools to strengthen awareness among the youth about responsible waste management.

Past flooding incidents revealed piles of garbage left scattered on streets, proving that many residents had dumped their trash into rivers—most notably in Baloy, Barangay Tablon, and Cugman.

Gabutina stressed that this serves as a clear reminder of the importance of environmental responsibility and collective discipline in protecting communities from future disasters.
