The International Criminal Court (ICC) has dismissed former President Rodrigo Duterte’s appeal seeking to overturn the decision that declared him “fit” to face pre-trial proceedings.
In its ruling released on February 13, the ICC’s Pre-Trial Chamber I stated that Duterte’s camp relied only on a “hypothetical scenario” suggesting his health might deteriorate during trial. The court found this argument speculative and insufficient.
The chamber reaffirmed its earlier January 26 decision that Duterte’s health is adequate for him to participate in the proceedings. In the 11-page ruling, the ICC emphasized that Duterte’s legal team failed to present any “appealable issues” that would justify reversing the decision.
