Atty. Samson So Tan, MDM, has raised the question of whether the Philippines is truly independent or still bound by the influence of its former colonizers.
Despite the nation’s celebration of independence, he observed that many Filipinos continue to aspire to work abroad, hoping for better opportunities in other countries.
He further explained that even if the Philippines had remained under American rule, a comfortable life would not be guaranteed, since prosperity still depends on the character of the people and the principles upheld by the nation’s leaders.
At present, he emphasized that what matters most is examining whether the values of the Filipino people and the actions of their leaders align with the country’s true ideals.
In line with this, he called for deeper reflection on whether Filipinos are using their freedom responsibly or merely settling for the easiest way of life.
