A deadly landslide triggered by Typhoon Basyang struck Gabule Compound in Barangay Agusan, Cagayan de Oro, claiming the lives of four members of the Lariosa family and injuring two children.
City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Department Manager Nick Jabagat confirmed the fatalities as infant Yasmeen, 12‑year‑old Yami, and parents Paul and Ruffa Lariosa, while minors Andi and Bril sustained injuries.
Mayor Rolando Uy immediately directed authorities to provide assistance to the victims’ families and oversee proper handling of the remains.
The heavy rains also prompted the suspension of classes and government operations across Cagayan de Oro and Misamis Oriental.
Office of the Civil Defense Region‑10 Director Antonio Sugarol underscored that the tragedy highlights the urgent need to heed disaster advisories issued at the barangay level.
He noted that residents had long been warned to evacuate, particularly those in flood‑prone and landslide‑prone areas.
Sugarol emphasized that disregarding such warnings heightens the risk of catastrophic incidents.
The community now views the event as a sobering reminder of the importance of preparedness and strict compliance with disaster protocols.
