United People’s Initiative (UPI) Legal Counsel Atty. Melchor Magdamo highlighted that their urgent petition filed before the Supreme Court is non-partisan, distinguishing it from earlier pleadings regarding the impeachment voting threshold.
Magdamo clarified that previous motions submitted by attorneys Vic Rodriguez, Ernest Francisco, and Berteni Causing focused primarily on relief for Vice President Sara Duterte.
In contrast, he explained that the UPI petition seeks to establish a universal precedent protecting all impeachable public officers, including Supreme Court Justices, by enforcing the constitutional requirement of 16 votes in the 24-member Senate.
