Hamilcar Chanjueco Jr., founder of Mindanao Pride, stated that there has been progress in the rights of the LGBTQIA+ community in the country today.

However, he admitted that there are still barriers that the sector must overcome to fully achieve its goals.

Chanjueco explained that while members of the LGBTQIA+ are now visible in media, academe, business, and government, they continue to face discrimination, especially transgender individuals.

He added that local ordinances remain insufficient, estimating that less than one percent of the 250 towns, cities, and provinces in Mindanao have implemented such measures.

Because of this, Mindanao Pride called for policies that would provide genuine protection against discrimination based on gender identity and sexual orientation.
