The Cagayan de Oro City Jail Male Dormitory once again opened its doors to love and commitment as it hosted Kasalan sa Piitan 2026, a program designed to give persons deprived of liberty (PDLs) a chance to strengthen family ties and rebuild their lives.

Jail Inspector Kriza Jane Bermudo, chief of the community relations service section, explained that the initiative is part of the jail’s rehabilitation efforts, recognizing the importance of family support in the reintegration of PDLs.

“The goal is to fortify family bonds and provide a second chance for those inside,” Bermudo said.

This year’s ceremony saw 31 couples exchange vows inside the facility, including six wives from the female dormitory who joined their husbands in the male dormitory for the occasion.

The event was marked by joy and solemnity, with families and jail officials witnessing the unions.

The program has become a tradition at the facility, celebrated every February. With this latest batch, the total number of couples married inside the jail has now reached 83 since the initiative began.

Beyond the symbolic exchange of vows, the mass wedding reflects the jail’s broader mission: to humanize incarceration by promoting rehabilitation, family unity, and hope for a better future after release.
