Former Oro Chamber President Ray Talimio Jr. urged the national government to retain Mindanao’s surplus power capacity locally rather than exporting energy to the Visayas grid, citing ongoing supply vulnerabilities.
Talimio warned of potential power outages in Mindanao if 200 to 500 megawatts of electricity are redirected out of the region while major generation facilities—such as Unit 2 of the GNPower Kauswagan coal plant—undergo repairs.
Citing regional energy data, he noted projected supply deficits ranging from 100 to 300 megawatts through December.
Talimio reaffirmed support for phasing out legacy coal power plants by 2030 to transition Mindanao toward a more reliable, renewable energy mix.
