Atty. Samson S. Tan, MDM, from the College of Law at Liceo de Cagayan University, warned that even though the Senate is acting as an impeachment trial court, it remains bound by the country’s rules and laws.
The lawyer pointed out that one cannot violate a person’s human rights by opening bank records based solely on suspicion, because no one is above the law.
For him, there must be sufficient reason in accordance with the law before taking such steps to ensure that due process is followed.
Furthermore, Atty. Tan emphasized that the country’s justice system is based on the rule of law and not the “rule of man,” so respect for rights must be maintained even in the pursuit of truth.
