The Alliance of Concerned Teachers (ACT) Northern Mindanao has expressed strong opposition to the proposed construction of a naval base inside the Phividec Industrial Authority in Tagoloan, Misamis Oriental.

Roland Cruz, the group’s coordinator, revealed that ACT has long stood against what they view as unequal agreements between the Philippines and the United States, particularly those expanding U.S. military presence in the country.

Among their concerns is the potential impact on workers of the Philippine Sanjai Steel Corporation operating within the Phividec area, especially as the company is currently under investigation, affecting its operations and employees’ livelihoods.

The group lamented that affected sectors are being sidelined in favor of prioritizing the naval base plan.

ACT Northern Mindanao called for greater attention to the plight of workers while discussions on the proposed military facility continue.
