Rauf Sissay of Bagong Alyansang Makabayan (BAYAN) criticized the Marcos administration’s boast that Filipino lives have improved, citing data released by the World Bank.

According to Sissay, a closer look at the country’s economic growth reveals that only a small fraction of society the wealthy one percent truly benefits. He clarified that this elite group is composed of billionaires, big comprador bourgeoisie, and multinational corporations that dominate trade and resources.

Such a situation, he stressed, exposes the deep divide between the rich and the masses who continue to suffer daily poverty.

Because of this, BAYAN is calling for urgent and just reforms to ensure that the fruits of economic growth are felt by the entire Filipino people.
