Former diplomat and law professor Atty. Jojo Lacanilao is closely monitoring Senate dynamics surrounding the vote threshold required for an impeachment decision against Vice President Sara Duterte.

Lacanilao noted that while some legal interpretations suggest a 14-vote baseline—amid shifts in coalition alignments and senator attendance—reaching a 16-vote supermajority remains essential to prevent extended legal disputes.

He explained that rendering a judgment with fewer than 16 votes will trigger immediate constitutional challenges before the Supreme Court regarding the Senate’s voting threshold.
