Joey Pelaez, former Executive Director of the Communications Service – Communications Affairs of the Department of Education (DepEd), called for major reforms, stricter student discipline, and a review of the overly rigid Child Protection Policy of the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD), saying it has affected DepEd’s policies.

Pelaez explained that the law is flawed because it was based on studies from countries like the United States, where child discipline differs from Asian practices.

He urged policymakers to draw from research in the Philippines and other nations with similar approaches to child upbringing.

Pelaez stressed that the brutal shooting incident in Tacloban City should not be left unresolved, warning that calls for reform must not be overshadowed by political maneuvering.
