The Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP) in Cagayan de Oro has responded to 38 fire incidents in the city, according to Captain John Donasco, Public Information Officer of the BFP-Cagayan de Oro Fire Department.
The latest blaze occurred at Borja Extension, Macajalar, Camaman-an, which escalated to a third alarm as houses made of light materials were quickly engulfed. The fire destroyed 33 homes, causing an estimated ₱600,000 in damages.
Reports indicate that around 50 families—nearly 200 individuals—lost their homes, while five houses sustained partial damage. Investigators have yet to determine the exact cause of the fire.
The BFP has urged residents to remain vigilant, avoid burning materials near homes built with light construction, and ensure all appliances are switched off when leaving the house.
They also reminded the public not to leave cooking unattended, especially in dirty kitchens.
