The Climate Change and Energy Programme of the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) placed strong emphasis on the celebration of the 56th Earth Day this Wednesday.
In an interview with Bombo Radyo CDO, Atty. Angela Ibay underscored the importance of commemorating Earth Day, especially in today’s context. She explained that Earth Day began more than five decades ago and remains vital as environmental problems continue to grow each year.
Ibay noted that while early observances focused mainly on tree planting and clean‑up drives, today’s advocacy has expanded to highlight how human activities significantly affect the environment—making protection of nature more urgent than ever.
She further explained that this year’s theme, “Our Power, Our Planet”, centers on accelerating the shift to renewable energy as a response to the energy crisis and to ensure sustainable electricity use.
Ibay called on the public to actively participate in initiatives against climate change and environmental degradation, stressing that collective action is essential to preserve the planet for future generations.
