City Councilor Girlie Balaba has given serious attention to the Mindanao Weather Update report stating that air quality in the city and in Iligan has reached hazardous levels.
She stressed the need to verify the findings and intends to call on the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) and the Department of Health (DOH) to collaborate on a study to confirm whether the city’s air quality is indeed dangerous.
Balaba clarified that pollution is not only caused by vehicle emissions but also by other factors, such as forest fires in Bukidnon, which have contributed to worsening air conditions that may harm public health.
As a precaution, she encouraged residents to voluntarily wear face masks.
She is currently awaiting official reports from the two agencies to guide further action.
