Senator Erwin Tulfo challenged the effectiveness of the proposed suspension of excise tax on petroleum products, arguing that its impact on the public would be minimal amid rising fuel prices.

During a Senate Committee on Proactive Response and Oversight hearing, Tulfo described the expected 10% reduction as “mere press release” and unlikely to be felt by ordinary citizens.

Meanwhile, Department of Economy, Planning, and Development (DEPDev) Secretary Arsenio Balisacan said the government continues to review all proposals, weighing their effects on the country’s overall fiscal situation.

Tulfo, however, urged that beyond excise tax, the government should also examine the possibility of suspending or zero‑rating the value‑added tax (VAT) on fuel.

He stressed that such measures could provide more meaningful relief to consumers struggling with the relentless rise in oil prices. Tulfo’s remarks highlight growing pressure on the administration to craft stronger, long‑term solutions to the energy crisis.
