As preparations continue at the Department of Agriculture Region 10 for the upcoming El Niño, Director Jose Apollo Pacamalan has proposed a quick response intervention to the national office, centered on the use of water-pumping equipment and the conversion of livestock waste into fertilizer.
He assured that, based on PAGASA’s forecast for the next six months, only one month is expected to experience below-normal rainfall.
Despite this, Pacamalan emphasized that the agency’s priority remains on food production areas in upland municipalities such as Talakag, Lantapan, and other locations with high relative humidity.
The official clarified that utilizing livestock waste will help improve soil quality, making it less vulnerable to heat stress. Ultimately, all these strategies are being implemented by DA-10 to ensure continuous food production for both farmers and consumers, even in the face of a possible dry spell.
