The Senate leadership is not compelled to immediately act once the articles of impeachment against Vice President Sara Duterte reach their chamber.

This comes after 257 members of the House of Representatives voted to impeach her based on alleged charges.

However, law professor Atty. Oscar Moreno of Xavier University explained that despite the overwhelming support in the House, the Senate retains discretion on when to begin proceedings.

He noted that the leadership may choose to wait until July to deliberate, even though the Constitution directs that the trial should start promptly.
