Atty. Jojo Lacanilao, a law professor at De Salle University, stated that while the programs presented in the SONA—such as housing and addressing the controversial “power loss” charges billed by electric distributors—sound good and are hard to argue against, a big question remains regarding their timeline of implementation.
He disclosed that these issues have been faced and discussed in the country for a long time, so why is the president only becoming determined to tackle them now, in the tenth or fourth year of his administration?
In his view, the government’s sudden action and seriousness indicate that the President has started looking for his “legacy” or tangible achievements to leave behind under his name before the next SONA arrives.
Although this is worthy of applause, the professor still criticized the delay in providing direct solutions to power crises and other basic public needs.
