The Provincial Government of Misamis Oriental has set a target of zero casualties as Typhoon Basyang continues to affect the province under Tropical Cyclone Wind Signal No. 2.
Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (PDRRMO) Head Fernando Sotsot Dy announced strict measures, including prohibiting children from going outdoors during heavy rains and enforcing class suspensions.
Fishing activities were also banned in line with a memorandum issued by the Philippine Coast Guard.
For the first time, all 23 municipalities and two cities in Misamis Oriental implemented a two-day suspension of classes at all levels beginning yesterday.
According to 24-hour monitoring by the PDRRMO, no casualties or missing persons have been reported despite flooding incidents.
Authorities confirmed that more than a thousand residents were displaced, with 789 families forced into evacuation and over 2,600 individuals sheltered in 13 evacuation centers.
Dy emphasized that these measures were designed to safeguard lives and minimize risks. Meanwhile, OCD-10 Regional Director Antonio Sugarol reiterated calls for vigilance, particularly in areas identified as highly vulnerable to the storm’s impact.
The coordinated response underscores the province’s proactive stance in disaster preparedness and its commitment to protecting communities during severe weather events.
